The basics
What is Thought Field Therapy (TFT)?
TFT is a clinical psychology technique developed by Dr Roger Callahan in the early 1980s. You tap with your fingertips on a sequence of acupressure points on the face, hand and torso while focusing on a target emotion or memory. The combination rapidly reduces emotional distress — often inside a single session — without medication and without having to relive painful events in detail. Full guide to how TFT works →
Is TFT the same as EFT?
No. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a simplified offshoot of TFT, created by Gary Craig — who originally trained with Dr Callahan. EFT uses one fixed sequence for everything; TFT uses different algorithms tailored to the specific issue, which is why TFT generally produces faster, more reliable results — particularly for trauma and addictions. Does tapping therapy actually work?
Yes — for the conditions it's designed for. TFT and related tapping therapies have a strong clinical track record for anxiety, trauma, phobias and addiction. Multiple peer-reviewed studies show measurable, lasting reductions in symptoms. The American Psychological Association classes EFT as evidence-based for PTSD, anxiety and depression. What conditions does TFT treat?
Anxiety, panic, phobias, PTSD and trauma, depression, addictions (drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, smoking), grief, anger, guilt, performance anxiety, OCD, stress and insomnia. It complements medical care for serious conditions, it doesn't replace it. Full treatment list →
How is TFT different from CBT?
CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) works at the level of thoughts and behaviours and typically takes 8–20 sessions. TFT works directly on the body's stress and craving response and typically resolves issues in 1–4 sessions. The two are complementary — many clients use TFT to clear the emotional charge that CBT then reinforces with new patterns.
Is TFT safe?
TFT has no known harmful side effects. It is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment of serious conditions, and works best as a complement to whatever care you're already receiving. If you're under medical care, don't stop or change treatment without your doctor's advice.
Is TFT evidence-based?
Yes. TFT and related tapping therapies have been studied in randomised controlled trials, meta-analyses and field studies including with military veterans and disaster survivors. Research shows clinically significant and durable reductions in PTSD, anxiety and phobia symptoms.
Practical: sessions, cost & format
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients see significant change in the first session. Most issues resolve in 1–4 sessions. Complex trauma and long-running addictions may need more. Stop-smoking is one extended session plus a follow-up call. Progress is reviewed at every appointment so you only book what you actually need.
How much does TFT cost in London?
Standard sessions are £120 for 60 minutes. The single-session stop-smoking programme is £180. The first 15-minute phone consultation is free with no obligation. Concession rates are available on request.
Can sessions be done over the phone or Zoom?
Yes. Tapping therapy works just as well remotely — you tap on yourself while Tracey guides you. Many of Tracey's clients are international and work with her by Zoom or phone from time zones from California to Singapore.
Where is the clinic?
Tracey works from clinics in Central London and North London by appointment, and worldwide by phone or Zoom. Home visits are available in some circumstances. Specific clinic addresses are confirmed when you book.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
Yes — Monday to Friday up to 7pm, Saturday 10am–4pm. Online appointments give the most flexibility, particularly across time zones.
How do I book?
Call 07979 421 200 or email info@tappingtherapy.co.uk. The first conversation is the free 15-minute consultation. If it's a fit, we book the first paid session at a time that works for you.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. 15 minutes by phone, no script, no pressure, no obligation to book.
Is what we discuss confidential?
Yes — completely. Sessions are private. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is shared with anyone (including GPs, employers or family) without your explicit written consent.
What sessions feel like
What does a TFT session feel like?
Most clients describe the tapping itself as gentle and easy. The change is felt as a release — sometimes physical (a sigh, tears, a sudden relaxation), sometimes cognitive (a memory becoming neutral, a "so what" feeling about something that used to charge you up). Energy levels often shift in the session.
How quickly do results show?
Inside the first session for most clients. We use a 0–10 distress scale before and after each tapping sequence, so the change is visible in real time, not something you wait weeks to feel.
Will I have to relive my trauma to process it?
No. TFT is one of the few trauma therapies that doesn't require detailed re-telling. You only need to bring the memory to mind enough to feel a small charge of it — a sentence is usually enough. The tapping does the work, not the talking.
Can I learn to do tapping myself?
Yes. Tracey teaches you the basic sequences during sessions so you have tools to use between appointments. Some issues you can self-treat; others need a trained practitioner to identify the right algorithm and clear blocks.
Will the change last?
Generally yes. Once an emotional charge is genuinely cleared, it stays cleared — provided the same triggering pattern isn't re-installed by repeated trauma. Tracey teaches self-tapping so you have tools if anything resurfaces.
Specific situations
Is TFT safe for children?
Yes — children often respond particularly well because they have less conscious resistance. Tracey works with adolescents directly and with younger children alongside a parent or carer.
What if I've tried other therapies and they didn't work?
Many of Tracey's clients arrive after trying other approaches. Failed therapy doesn't predict failed TFT — it tells us the previous method didn't suit your pattern. TFT works on the body-level emotional charge that talk-based methods often can't reach.
Can TFT help with weight loss?
Indirectly. We don't tap calories away — but we can clear the emotional drivers of overeating (stress, comfort-eating loops, sugar dependence, body-image distress), which removes the engine driving the weight gain.
Will I need to stop my medication?
No — never stop or change prescribed medication without speaking to your prescribing doctor. TFT works alongside medication. Some clients find that, with their GP's agreement, they can taper down over time as symptoms improve.
Do you work with men, women or both?
Tracey works with adults of all genders. Particular experience in supporting both men and women through trauma, addiction and performance-anxiety presentations.
How do I know if you're a good fit?
Use the free 15-minute consultation. If TFT or Tracey isn't the right fit for your situation, she'll say so directly — and where possible point you in a useful direction.
Question we haven't answered?
